Workshop Day Info

2010 Schedule

Why do we have a “workshop day” at the Vancouver Kiwanis Choral Festival?
The “workshop day” was initiated in response to feedback the festival received from local choral directors who felt that they needed a festival for their more “junior” choirs (either in age or ability). As a result, we designed a festival day that focuses on workshop, learning and sharing for your students.

Who is the “workshop day” for?
The workshop day is for any director who feels that their choir would benefit from this different festival format. Eliminating confusion Last year there were some questions like “is my choir good enough to register for the regular festival or should we do the workshop day?”. To clarify - both the workshop day and the regular festival are open to choirs of any age, size or ability. Directors should choose the festival formal that they feel will benefit their choir the most. We have many beginning level choirs in the regular festival and last year some very experienced choirs chose to do the workshop day.

Does the workshop day have the same clinicians as the main festival?
No. The workshop day clinicians were specifically chosen for the age group they will be working with. The morning elementary session clinicians are: Fiona Blackburn, John Trepp and Sarona Mynhardt. The secondary session clinicians are: Jim Sparks, John Trepp and Gerry Van Wyck

How is it different from the regular festival?
1. The workshop day participants have a one-hour mass workshop where they work with a renowned vocal expert who will specifically address aspects of tone production and vocal technique. The main festival participants do not receive this workshop.
2. The workshop day participants will have the opportunity to watch a performance by a special guest choir. The regular festival participants do not have this opportunity.
3. The workshop participants are required to stay for the entire morning or afternoon session, i.e. 9:00 am to 12:00 pm or 12:30 pm to 4:00 pm.
4. The workshop choirs are required to sing 2 songs, the main festival choirs perform three.
5. The main festival allows 60 minutes for each choir (15 minutes warm up, 15 minutes performance, and 30 minutes in clinic). The workshop day allows 30 minutes total (10 minutes performance, 20 minutes clinic)

Do I still get taped and written feedback from the adjudicators? Yes.

Will I get a videotape or our performance?
No.
